In the vibrant world of Nigerian gospel music, few names command as much respect and admiration as Evangelist Dr. Onimole Rotimi Micheal — the man the world knows as Oba Ara.
From humble beginnings as a young chorister in Lagos to becoming a global gospel-fuji phenomenon, Oba Ara’s journey is one deeply rooted in faith, resilience, and divine calling. His story is not just that of a musician but of a visionary, a pioneer, and a man who turned his God-given voice into a vessel of transformation.
Born on Lagos Island, Lagos State, Oba Ara’s connection to music began in the pews of Christ Love Evangelistic Mission, Abiola Bus-Stop, Ketu. Even as a young chorister, he knew music was more than just melody—it was ministry.
In 1996, with a dream in his heart and faith as his compass, he established his band, Ayo Oluwa International Melody Entertainment. What began as a small gospel group has, over two decades, grown into a powerful musical movement touching lives across continents.
Oba Ara’s big break came in 2010 with the release of his debut album, “Oba Ara” — a spiritually charged project that didn’t just announce him to the world but named him. “Oba Ara,” meaning “King of Wonders,” became both his identity and his mission.
Three years later, “Beautiful Testimony (Eri To Rewa)” cemented his place in the hearts of gospel lovers. Shot partly in Nigeria and abroad, the album’s video and audio versions resonated with both local and international audiences.
His third album, “Oba A Ju Lo”, became an anthem of praise — a musical tapestry woven with stories of God’s greatness. And most recently, he released “Oba Ogo Yii”, a continuation of his testimony-driven ministry in song.
But Oba Ara isn’t just singing gospel — he’s redefining it. As the creator of the “gospel-fuji” genre, he fused the energetic pulse of Fuji music with the powerful message of Christ. The result? A sound that is both deeply spiritual and culturally rich, resonating with youth, elders, and churchgoers alike.
With a passion for praise and anointing for performance, Oba Ara founded the “Power in Praise Concert” — a quarterly worship experience that brings together some of Nigeria’s finest gospel acts. The concert has become a staple on the gospel calendar, known for its spiritual intensity and musical excellence.
His influence stretches beyond the church walls. A proud member of both GOMAN (Gospel Music Association of Nigeria) and MAAN (Music Advertisement Association of Nigeria), Oba Ara remains a key figure in shaping Nigeria’s gospel music scene.
