As a former Senator representing Oyo South Senatorial District in 1993, he demonstrated a profound understanding of legislative processes, championing bills that addressed economic reforms and social welfare, drawing from his background as a successful businessman and economist. His tenure as Governor of Oyo State from 2003 to 2007 was marked by bold initiatives in infrastructure development, including road networks and urban renewal projects that transformed Ibadan, while his administration’s focus on education and healthcare laid foundational improvements for our great state. Kabiyesi’s elder statesman roles was not limited to politics; he served as a mediator in national crises and a voice for unity in Nigeria’s diverse and big landscape, his counsel sought by leaders across the spectrum for its balance of pragmatism and principle.
In his elder statesman capacity, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja has exemplified compassion and resolve, often stepping in to resolve traditional disputes within Ibadanland and advising on national reconciliation efforts, such as during ethnic tensions in the Southwest. His personality radiates genuine compassion, seen in his philanthropic endeavours supporting orphanages and community health programs, while his principled stand against corruption during and after his governorship earned him respect, even amid controversies. Kabiyesi’s ability to find way within complex political terrains with integrity has made him a symbol of resilience, a leader who prioritises the welfare of his people over personal gain. This blend of firmness and empathy has solidified his status as a father figure in Ibadan and a national icon, whose life story inspires generations to pursue public service with honour.
Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja’s ascension to the ancestral throne of Olubadan is one of the most anticipated in Ibadan history, a culmination of a rotational system rooted in our city’s unique chieftaincy structure established in the 19th century under the British colonial era, which ensured orderly succession. This event is eagerly awaited not only by Ibadan indigenes but by friends and partners worldwide, reflecting his global network built through diplomatic engagements and business ties. Kabiyesi has exhibited poised composure in his dealings, safeguarding the throne from abuse and ridicule by advocating for transparency in traditional affairs and resisting attempts to politicise the institution. His actions have preserved the sanctity of Ibadan’s monarchy, a system admired for its merit-based progression from Mogaji to Olubadan, encouraging stability in a city known as Nigeria’s third-largest.
Yesterday, September 10, 2025, my team visited Kabiyesi at his home to pay homage and respect, a gesture I deem a huge responsibility as an illustrious son of Ibadan from Foko, where ancestral ties bind us to the city’s heritage. The journey was facilitated by our Mama Her Excellency, Mrs Bolajoko Doherty MFR and the delegation was led by my PA Hon. Sunday Ademoroti, Mogaji Ramon Raaji, Alhaji Wahab Oseni, Jagunmolu Adeen Wabillahi Taofeeq Worldwide, Hon. Hammed AbdulSalaam, AKK Oyo South Senatorial leader, Mrs Olaoye, AKK Woman Leader and her team and includes, Hon. Aderemi Kazeem Onibudo, Hon. Musa Onibudo, Hajia Rukayat Kareem, Opo Adeen Wabillahi Taofeeq Worldwide and Members of AKK movement. This visit, amid preparations for his crowning, allowed my representatives to convey my admiration for his legacy and receive his royal blessings, which I hold dear as a source of strength in my own endeavours. The team was warmly received, engaged in discussions on state development, and they presented gifts as a token of esteem. Kabiyesi’s prayers for success and unity were a special moment that reinforced the bond between leadership and communal bonds as strong as that of Ibadan.
I have immense respect for the traditional institution, which is integral to the growth and development of the state, serving as a custodian of culture and a mediator in governance. With Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja’s experience as a former Governor, I have no doubt that the synergy between the throne and modern administration will be perfect and rewarding, one that will offer continued mentorship to leaders and ensure harmony. All Ibadan sons and daughters, along with Oyo State residents, cannot wait to witness his crowning, a historic event that promises renewed vigour for our land. I personally cannot wait, and I pray for Kabiyesi’s continued health and wisdom as he ascends his deserving status and this sacred role.
